One Step of Faith

Written by Dr. Albertine Marshall

Exercising faith often requires us to make the first move. Through our trust in God, we take that first step with child-like dependence, focusing our eyes on Him. Those who are weak in the faith may act just the opposite. They tend to stand still while looking for God to move. Once they are convinced that God is in the situation and something has happened that cannot be explained by natural means, they are willing to follow. What about that? Is that really faith?

Let's consider two situations:

John 5:1-9    John wrote about a man at the pool of Bethsaida who waited each day for someone to place him in the pool of water that he may receive his healing. Being asked by Jesus if he wanted to be healed, the man indicated that he had no one to help him and other people always got in front of him. So he remained crippled ... blaming others and his inability to move fast enough for his remaining in that condition for such a long time. Thus, he failed to take that one step. He had excuses but notice, Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk.” The man had to get up and walk. He had to take a step. How did he do it? How much faith did he exercise? Were there other means by which he could have taken that one step?

Before you attempt to answer these questions, consider another situation:

Joshua 3:1-17    As the Israelites were preparing to cross the Jordan River, the priests went ahead of the people, carrying the ark of God. As soon as the feet of the priests touched the edge of the water, the water flowing from upstream ceased and the water formed a wall. The priests then stood on dry land. It took faith for the priests to take a step into the water, not knowing whether they would fall into the water, drop the ark, and possibly drown. The Scripture does not indicate that they were afraid to take that first step. They just did. The feet of the priests stepped into water. There feet were wet. However, because they took the first step, the people were able to cross the Jordan on dry ground.

Who is depending on you to have faith so that they may walk on dry ground? Anyone? Are you able to take that first step to help someone else even though your feet may get wet?

Which illustration describes you? Are you waiting for someone else, possibly Jesus, to move so that you can take a step? Or can you take one step, get your feet wet, and keep stepping? If you look at your circumstances through the lens of your faith, do you have enough faith to take that first step?

When you visit websites that you just enjoy and even come back to easily, the very best thing to do is to add.

But that doesn't mean all question and answer websites are manufactured equal.
