The True Power of Togetherness

kingcolor75x75 There's no secret to the fact that together we can do anything. The power of unity is the greatest power we have. No one can do it alone although it does begin with each individual, each neighborhood, and each community.  One of the top missions of FaySpirations.com is to help bring churches and people of faith together for the betterment of this community.

Dr. King spoke of unity on so many occasions. In fact he would often say that we have not made one gain in civil rights without unity and a determined will to see that every human being is treated with dignity and fairness.

Rosa Parks is a great historical figure whose refusal to give up her seat to someone of another race sparked the beginning of what we know as the Civil Rights Movement. Her role was certainly huge. But it was the 50-thousand Negroes in Montgomery Alabama who refused absolutely to ride the buses for 381 days that brought about the Supreme Court's decision that segregation in public transportation was unconstitutional.

In King's very last speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop" he said, "You know whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of slavery in Egypt he had a favorite, favorite formula for doing so. He kept the slaves fighting among themselves. But whenever the slaves get together, something happens in Pharaoh's court and he could not hold the slaves in slavery. Whenever the slaves get together, that's the beginning of getting out of slavery. Now let us maintain unity."

King knew that it would take everyone to cure the ills of this nation and this world. He spoke of the interrelatedness of all people and how we all depend on each other.

"We're caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the way the world is made. This is the interrelated structure of reality."

The true power of togetherness lies in each individual. Ask yourself, "What am I doing to help bring about unity. What am I doing to make this world a better place to live? What is my church doing to help bring about significant change in this community?"
